And yet, this is exactly what you all do not do. Thread. https://twitter.com/CTmagazine/status/1321131803726544900
So this review of @kkdumez book by @DanlHarrell is dreck, but I want to file this under White Evangelical Male tries to subjugate smarter Evangelical woman by trivializing her academic work. Let me explain.
He doesn't start off by dealing with the claims of the book rather, he makes it about HIMSELF. Dude. No one cares about your experience of Gothard or the girlfriend who is thanking the Lord every day she didn't marry you.
In what universe do you start off a book review with a story about you and the girlfriend rather than the book that deals with evangelical toxic masculinity? Hubris, much?
So let's get deeper into the @CTmagazine review by @DanlHarrell ...in true evangelical fashion, rather than dealing with the book, he uses his own personal experience as the template for the review. As if his personal life means anything to ANY OF US.
Psst. IT DOESN'T
But it's a classic evangelical deflection. Let me make this about me rather than @kkdumez fine book, and that will make it easier to trash, rather than dealing with research and facts. A+ Classic move. Well done.
Let me lift this line from the review "At the same time, Du Mez seems guilty of a bit of confirmation bias. If you’re hunting for white privilege and fragility, it’s not hard to find." Uh, you embody privilege and fragility throughout this review @DanlHarrell. Shameful.
By pooh poohing the book with personal anecdotes, not dealing with the real abuses of Gothard and many other Evangelical men who have abused women and the patriarchy, @DanlHarrell reifies all of the things that @kkdumez outlines in her book.
the telling line is this one, however. "Hierarchy has its upsides, as I’ve enjoyed genuine privilege. And as one popular adage has it, when you’re accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." This, my friends is the crux of the issue for White evangelicals.
Equality feels like oppression to white men because they don't want to lose their power! so to act like that doesn't matter is disingenuous. @DanlHarrell
Sadly, this review of @kkdumez book by @DanlHarrell proves that the Scandal of the Evangelical mind is still with us, and that the inability to think analytically is sorely lacking and it's a shame that this is what @CTmagazine sees fit to print. But again, its the editor, so....
I can't wait to see what @DanlHarrell will have to say about White Evangelical Racism. Because that's the companion book to @kkdumez excellent volume, and I'm happy to send you a free copy. The racism and patriarchy in evangelicalism go together like Peanut butter and Jelly.
