My BFF lives in Philly. Her closest polling area yesterday was the one you may have seen video of — people standing in the rain. She showed up and they were organizing so those who had come on public transit could get priority in line.
Those with cars and certain voters agreed to try another polling place or come back today.
She went back. Lines were still long. She drove all over to find a shorter line. It took her 2.5 hours to vote.
But she said the community is incredible. Caring for one another. Helping one another. Prioritizing people with scheduling issues or transportation issues or extenuating physical needs.
Some of these people have never voted before. They have been systematically disenfranchised.
But they are showing up in droves and finding joy and community together and I’m just saying this because we all need a bright spot.
She made friends with a Vietnam vet who owns an antique bookshop and he said he wanted her to come by this week to give her some of his books for her kids.
Maybe we can do this.
