The lies government now tells us on a daily basis...

1. A government department claims publicly (trying to jump on #GBBO buzz) that the new trade deal with Japan (largely replicating EU-Japan deal terms) will make soya sauce cheaper... https://twitter.com/tradegovuk/status/1321187022883663873
2. A trade expert corrects the false government claim. The EU trade deal (which we still benefit from while in transition) also has 0% tariff on soy sauce https://twitter.com/davidheniguk/status/1321189001240432649
3. The government department then doubles down on their claim. But they reveal that their claim is based not on cheaper compared to what we have now, via the EU, but cheaper compared to the future situation they would have put us in, where we’re on WTO terms post-Brexit https://twitter.com/tradegovuk/status/1321194448710225920
4. They have been tweeting multiple messages with this false claim about products from Japan being about to become cheaper... https://twitter.com/tradegovuk/status/1321183395116888065
5. At best they could claim “these products aren’t about to become more expensive as we have replicated the same terms we had through the EU” - but for accuracy they should add “however, Brexit’s impact on the pound means they have become more expensive in real terms”
6. Government department comms accounts should not do the lying on ministers’ behalf. These tweets are in breach of the civil service code @tradegovuk and should be removed immediately
7. But the message we should all take from @tradegovuk tweets - they accept that WTO terms are a very bad thing, but those are the terms they are about to put us on with most of the world. They know they are inflicting rising prices for most of our imports.
