Just been to a Champions League match here in Kyiv with spectators.
Shakhtar Donetsk v Inter Milan (£21).
Given discussions about allowing fans back in elsewhere ... some observations...
The stadium has a 70k capacity... and they were allowed to fill 15 percent.
Surprising given that Ukraine appears to have little control over rising COVID cases (about 7k a day and more than 100 deaths a day).
Supposedly there were just 10k in the stadium. It looked and felt like more - and spread out round the stadium there was a reasonable atmosphere.
There was a temperature check on entry and we had to wear masks. Compliance was mixed ... and hard for stewards to enforce.
In theory we were sold seats that spaced us apart... in practice of course people wanted to sit with their family and friends.
Again there was little stewards could do to enforce social distancing... or decide who should be allowed to sit together.
For any football club thinking of allowing a limited number of fans back in to create an atmosphere ... the question would be how do you get fans to space and not group together inside.
It’s almost impossible to enforce.
Oh and the match... a moderately entertaining 0-0... but nice to see a l game in the flesh after a long time away.
