A thread.

Almost every single 2D Sonic fangame out there, if not, ALL, usually just look the same for the most part, and just look like it's just trying to be the next Genesis or 32X or Mania.
Sometimes you'd see how the crew gets shaded differently, whether to make the aesthetic look flat, pre-rendered, whatever.

To me, stuff like this is getting stale and boring. You barely see anyone take a spin on Sonic.
A good example of a spin on Sonic, or any character for that matter, is the fangame Sonic and the Mayhem Master. You don't got Sonic looking like he came from someone's own Genesis-shading take. Instead, you got a Sonic that actually stands out from pretty much...
...the ever-accumulating flood of identical-looking custom Sonics. Hell, my intention with my own Sonic spritesheet was to make him stand out! Which leads to this part of the thread (which is in the next tweet.)...
Being on-model.
Now I get it, you want to have something to look to that you can begin with or whatever when it comes to like, art, but eventually, it's going to be boring to look at.
Back to when I mentioned all the 2D fangames, every 2D Sonic fangame suffers from being on-model
You don't see anyone changing it up from the normal.
In my eyes, there needs to be some variety with a recognizable icon. Something that makes it unique or at least stand out so that it doesn't blend in with the rest, whether it'd be artwork, gameplay, who cares.
Sonic fangames in the sprite-based 2D sense don't have any variety. The only noticable thing when it comes to variety and Sonic is how the characters and worlds are shaded. Sure we got those who want to mimic an existing style, but can you change more than just the shading?
Yes.
Honestly, fucking up the anatomy works if you wanna make something stand out sometimes and the time is right. It's like art styles and how some artists have a different kind of flow. For me, I draw Sonic with an anthro-like base. (Yeah I'm a furry, what to it-)
Would I wanna draw him like some amalgamation from Generations? No. Maybe I would, for a challenge, but I don't really care that much to challenge myself to be up to par with a model sheet's standards.
Another point, The Spriter's Resource.
TSR's a place where sprites and other resources alike are ripped and people can see. There's one category I'm talking about. Custom/Edited.

The custom/edited category hosts a bunch of different media from many talented people.
We got those who try to go for a style from another game. Those who use their own style. And ones who just want to expand.

When I'm mentioning style here, I'm also applying it to design. Sonic customs on there are, for the most part, the same thing.
Genesis, Mania, you barely see one that looks different and actually unique. Assume all you want, but let me say something.

Look at this screenshot. What do you see?
Obviously you're seeing some sprites that try to go for a non-Sonic style, but you're not seeing any sprites that change up his overall model.
I'm not saying that these sprites are bad. These are crafted well and the time and effort put into these isn't wasted at all.
But what I AM saying is this:
Are you just afraid to reject being on-model with Sonic or any character, for that matter? Like come on, if you see people with unique styles in art, then surely this can be applied to sprites.

You don't need to be on-model for a sprite to look good
That's the problem with custom Sonic sprites. There's no backbone uniqueness to it. What I mean by that, is there's no one who wants to put in the extra percentage to make it stand out and look different. Shading's one thing, but why not make his model look different?
If Mario can make the switch from being detailed and regular to paper and simple, and vice versa in terms of appearance, then why not do it with Sonic? Like come on, shading can make one thing stand out good, but taking a spin on the model itself can make it stand out better.
Like I'm tired of seeing the same old shit, trying to be the next Genesis or Mania. I wanna see actual variety. And with the custom Sonic sheets, it's not doing a good enough job. There's obviously more potential than just have the shading look flat.
Come on, you're better than this.

But yeah I'mma end it here.
If you're wanting more stuff like this then let me know, I guess.

"oh you're a furry though, you can't have opinions"
well shut the fuck up then, it doesn't make a difference from what i want to actually say.
if you're wondering. Yes, I'll be doing 3 more Sonic customs. Amy, Robotnik, and Metal Sonic.

No, I'm not doing Knuckles.

And no. Never ask for any other Sonic characters from me in this rabbit hole of a fanbase.
You're already spoiled enough with Sonic and Tails, you can handle someone that ISN'T Sonic.

You can legit have Sonic without Sonic. He doesn't need to be spoiled rotten with all the fucking limelight.
One more thing, I'm looking at you, SRB2. Sonic had some stylization to him in 2.1, but now he just looks fucking bland and generic in 2.2.

Like name a bigger downgrade than that.
