If the birthing room is the woman's space, then logically, it's the woman's consent clinicians need for entering that space. Consent can't be assumed in this social dynamic, it has to be bestowed. So why are we having ward rounds? A thread. #maternity #midwives #obstetricians
Like seriously, what is the purpose of ward rounds unless the woman wants to meet the medical team? It appears to be an assertion of dominance over the woman's space, even if the staff don't intend it that way. Nothing screams "I'm in charge" like a consultant and an entourage.
Obstetricians are vital team mates for safe births and safe maternity care, but we can't ignore the old fashioned heirarchies that still stand when we interact with Doctors. We need to move away from the notion of status and into the values of justice and dignity for all.
