Hi, @eldsjal. Let’s chat. The Gimlet Union has been bargaining a fair and equitable contract since August of last year. Even given the extraordinary circumstances of 2020, this is an incredibly long period for bargaining our initial contract.
The things we’re asking for are not controversial, @eldsjal —just and fair minimum starting salaries, guaranteed yearly across the board salary increases, clear pathways to promotion, and making sure producers have some stake in the IP they create.
Yet every time we go to a bargaining session, huge swaths of our requests are unilaterally redlined by management. We’ve asked for clarification on their objections, but have not been able to get a straight answer.
We are using our collective bargaining power to try and improve conditions at @Gimletmedia and @Spotify not just to benefit ourselves, but to make our workplace better and stronger.
Higher minimum salaries and guaranteed benefits will improve retention, and help us get the best producers in the industry. Our aggressive stance on hiring BIPOC will help us make sure our workplace and the journalism we produce is diverse and challenging.
We have lost a number of employees of color in the past year, and we know why—we’ve surveyed the unit, and found that a lot of these people are leaving because they see no clear path to promotion. These are all solvable problems and we have proposed solutions, @eldsjal.
We are writing this today to ask you to come to the table without crossing out our proposals entirely, but to help us work together to make @gimlet a fairer, stronger, more inclusive place to work. We look forward to working with you at the bargaining table next month.
