In this scene we get to peek into Kacchan’s thought process regarding “atonement” and how he applies EVERYTHING here to himself and Deku.

(Class 1A felt bad bcs they’re the reason for the stress of other classes. So in a way they want to “atone” for that)
There are 4 keywords in the clip that explains Kacchan’s way of atoning

①自己満 (jikoman = self satisfaction)
→Kacchan doesn’t want it to be for their own self-satisfaction
Sometimes without realizing, instead of GIVING back to the people they caused trouble to+
+people try to make up for the trouble they caused to RECEIVE “validation”.

Kacchan pointed out to that WITHOUT REALIZING they might be doing this. They say they want to help to release stress but they might just want to be liked and RECEIVE validation from other classes+
②ムカつく (mukatsuku= annoying)
→ it’s a bad idea for the source of annoyance to act like they could “help”
Though his way of saying it was rough, Kacchan was just putting himself in other classes’ shoes. And he might be able to do so bcs of his experience with Deku.+
Back then, without knowing that he’s being Kacchan’s stress source, Deku tried to “help” (reached out his hands etc) but that didn’t work well. What worked well was when Deku decided to went all out and FIGHT Kacchan in Deku vs. Kacchan 2.
So he’s telling his classmates to change their motivation from trying “help” → show them the best “FIGHT” so the other classes would got “beaten up” that they have to admit they had fun, just like Kacchan could get the weight off his shoulders after Deku gave his all.+
③顔色を窺う (kao iro ugakau = trying to find out how or guess how the other classes feel)
→ kacchan pointed out that IF they wanna DO IT, instead of worrying about how others feel, they should be HONEST with themselves.+
They got caught up with villains not because they want to, but somehow got hated by other classes, so deep down class 1A must’ve felt pissed for the unfairness too. Once they’re honest with themselves, they could convert those pent up pissed feelings into energy for performing
④機嫌取り (kigen tori: ass kissing/bootlicking)
→ kacchan saying if it’s only for people-pleasing better not to do the show.
He doesn’t want their “atonement” to become an ass-kissing show.
He’s implying that they shouldn’t EXPECT other classes to like them or wanna be friends with them after the show bcs that would just be hypocritical. When they GIVE, they shouldn’t expect to RECEIVE anything back whether it’s friendliness or validations.
In the end Todoroki understood where Kacchan was coming from and why he is so passionate about “killing them with sound”. It was because Bakugo is the one that got kidnapped and actually felt most “guilty” about the whole thing
Kacchan had been applying everything he said in this clip for his own atonement towards Deku and I believe that is why he could tell off his classmates like this
①It’s implied that to him, there’s no need for Deku to know that he’s atoning, and he needs no validation from anyone, even from Deku himself, therefore his atonement is NOT ONLY for the sake of self-satisfaction. We didn’t even get to hear it from himself that he’s atoning
②He knows that it would make Deku uncomfortable if he suddenly act all buddy-buddy and trying to “help”, because that’s how he felt. This time he put himself in the position of the “source of annoyance” that’s why even while “helping” Deku, he fights all out.
③He’s still honest with himself that he still wants to win against Deku and be number 1. Him atoning doesn’t mean that he would succumb nor allow Deku to surpass him, or think about how Deku would feel if he lost to Kacchan.
④He’s kissing no one’s ass, and he doesn’t expect to RECEIVE forgiveness from Deku. It’s portrayed that he’s doing all his “atonement deeds” (practice, protecting him, etc) genuinely and sincerely out of him caring for Deku’s wellbeing.
