I think itās pretty obvious why Iām making this. The biggest argument against Trae is Jamalās performance in the POs. I donāt want to diminish or slander Jamalās run but Iām rather going to show the realities of it. It was still an amazing run just making sure thatās clear
Jamal played at an elite level against some elite defenses(clippers/lakers) and doing it at the pinnacle of pressure, being down and coming back from a 3-1 deficit twice. He elevated his game on the biggest stage, huge props to him
However, this was not all Jamal which I think ppl forget. Jamal did this next to one of the best playoff performers in the league, Jokic. The gravity Jokic generated cannot be understated and itās a large reason why I donāt think this PO run negates Trae being better in the RS
Apart from the fact that heās Jokic, he also allowed Jamal easier access to the basket by positioning himself on the perimeter and taking more jump shots and hitting those shots. Very high IQ strategy from Jokic and Iād assume Malone also had something to do with that as well
I donāt think thereās an argument that Jamal and Trae were close in the RS and I donāt think this playoff run, albeit a great one, bridges that gap. Trae was elite in the RS(top 3 O-PIPM, top 2 O-RPM, top 4 O-RAPTOR) That canāt be ignored
The other common gripe against Trae is defense. This ones easy. Jamal is not Jrue Holiday on defense, Iād say at best heās an okay defender. The gap between their offense is much bigger than the gap between their defense
Here are their percentile rankings for the RS, unfortunately these are not available for the POs

Jamal Left, Trae Right
Jamal Left, Trae Right
Also Iām not debating with anyone that says Trae puts up āempty statsā He did everything he could to help his team win but they couldnāt, thatās effort not stat padding. Also heās not only bad on defense cause he doesnāt try, he also has no length, strength or defensive IQ
Jamalās elite 19 game playoff run was an amazing one but having Jokic was a big help and that needs to be considered. I donāt believe Jamals run negates Trae playing at an elite level for 60 games. And no, the Hawks not even making the bubble was NOT Traeās fault
