I think itā€™s pretty obvious why Iā€™m making this. The biggest argument against Trae is Jamalā€™s performance in the POs. I donā€™t want to diminish or slander Jamalā€™s run but Iā€™m rather going to show the realities of it. It was still an amazing run just making sure thatā€™s clear
Jamal played at an elite level against some elite defenses(clippers/lakers) and doing it at the pinnacle of pressure, being down and coming back from a 3-1 deficit twice. He elevated his game on the biggest stage, huge props to him
However, this was not all Jamal which I think ppl forget. Jamal did this next to one of the best playoff performers in the league, Jokic. The gravity Jokic generated cannot be understated and itā€™s a large reason why I donā€™t think this PO run negates Trae being better in the RS
Apart from the fact that heā€™s Jokic, he also allowed Jamal easier access to the basket by positioning himself on the perimeter and taking more jump shots and hitting those shots. Very high IQ strategy from Jokic and Iā€™d assume Malone also had something to do with that as well
I donā€™t think thereā€™s an argument that Jamal and Trae were close in the RS and I donā€™t think this playoff run, albeit a great one, bridges that gap. Trae was elite in the RS(top 3 O-PIPM, top 2 O-RPM, top 4 O-RAPTOR) That canā€™t be ignored
The other common gripe against Trae is defense. This ones easy. Jamal is not Jrue Holiday on defense, Iā€™d say at best heā€™s an okay defender. The gap between their offense is much bigger than the gap between their defense
Also Iā€™m not debating with anyone that says Trae puts up ā€œempty statsā€ He did everything he could to help his team win but they couldnā€™t, thatā€™s effort not stat padding. Also heā€™s not only bad on defense cause he doesnā€™t try, he also has no length, strength or defensive IQ
Jamalā€™s elite 19 game playoff run was an amazing one but having Jokic was a big help and that needs to be considered. I donā€™t believe Jamals run negates Trae playing at an elite level for 60 games. And no, the Hawks not even making the bubble was NOT Traeā€™s fault
