Excellent thread on Sweden's COVID-19 situation. This clarifies some of the facts from the myths. I highly encourage and recommend reading this thread. https://twitter.com/celinegounder/status/1320721908850139142
Takeaways :
1) Cases have between rising since Aug/ Sept timeframe, not unlike the rest of Europe. Hospitalizations and death lag, let’s see if that the case in Sweden;
2) Comparisons with US, Italy, Germany, Norway and UK, with helpful charts;
3) Within Sweden’s scientific....
4) and medical community, a debate about the strategy has simmered and frequently boiled over....A group of scientists known as “the 22” has called for tougher measures since April, when it published a blistering critique of the country’s public health authority....
5) the Folkhälsomyndigheten (FoHM). The group, which has grown to include 50 scientists and another 150 supporting members, now calls itself the Vetenskapsforum COVID-19 (Science Forum COVID-19);
6) Are Sweden’s death underestimated ? If you consider many Swedes dies w/o being tested, many of Sweden’s severely ill patients weren’t hospitalized and most of Sweden’s nursing home residents weren’t taken to hospitals- there support for the argument;
7) Sweden’s Public Health Agency didn’t order shutdowns or lockdowns. Instead it recommended social distancing, working from home and avoiding unnecessary travel.
8) A key distinction for shutdowns and lockdown for Sweden vs other countries-the Swedish Infectious Diseases Act can restrict individuals, but it does not allow for a general lockdown. This is why Sweden’s COVID mitigation measures have been recommendations rather than mandates;
9) Swedes, in contrast to other countries, have greater institutional trust and have changed their behavior to protect themselves from COVID-19;
10) Swedes despite the country’s approach toward COVID-19, is nowhere near herd immunity, if one buys into that theory;
11)Economic impacts for Sweden-1st H of 2020, Sweden’s GDP fell 8.5%, less than Germany, but MORE than Norway & Finland. Also less than US;
12) Sweden’s CB forecasts Sweden’s economy will contract by 7-10% in 2020. EUC forecasts economic contraction for EZ of 7.75% in 2020;
13) Sweden (to its credit)has much better social & economic, as well as a great HC system. US doesn’t compare favorably in this regard, thus applying Sweden’s approach to a country like the US, would impact US citizens much harder.
