I, @simonegingrich, @JuliaLeNoe, @FSchwarzmueller, @Nicolas43513211 et al review approaches quantifying land use impacts ( #emissions) from biomass consumption.

Why? Because method choices dictate final estimates.

Analysis of studies (n=20) reveals 4 #research clusters along 2 axes:
Topical focus separates land change drivers ( #consumption) and outcomes ( #emissions).

Analytical focus uncouples observation of current trends (on-ground impacts) and potential scenarios (prospective cases).

3 dimensions:
- Are carbon stocks compared to previous years' or to assumed potentials?

- Is the scale spatially-explicit or aggregated to the country level?

- Are the impacts estimated across one year or several years?

...affect #CO2 #emissions embodied in consumption.

Which clusters and dimensions are dominant in the literature?
- Approaches of consumption-driven tropical #deforestation
- Impact #footprinting across countries.

What's not?
Granular, single-year lost potentials approaches.

We learn:
- Reference baselines lead to bias vs. countries currently having

- scale reveals impacts of direct human actions; aggregated studies its underlying processes.

- Resolving land management legacies over multiple years remains a key challenge.
