In recent years, the civil service has been further pilloried because they're part of the nefarious "deep state." Or something. The thing is, most civil servants work so, so hard every day to make things better for Americans and safer for America. 2/
Civil servants are nonpartisan. They serve the constitution, not a president. Which means that any Administration coming in can rely on the civil service to help them make solid policy decisions. 3/
And as a result - rightly or wrongly - civil servants rarely join the policy and public debates on national policy matters. Because doing so could be considered partisan.

The practical upshot is that many civil servants can't defend their work or the vital role they play. 4/
So this enormous thing is happening that could have an enormous impact on the effective functioning of the United States Government, and the folks *most affected generally don't feel able to join the debate. 5/

*everyone is affected, but particularly civil servants.
I really hope that external voices get even more exercised about this issue. The civil service needs defending, IMHO. Time to defend this crown jewel of the United States government. 6/end.
