In recent years, the civil service has been further pilloried because they& #39;re part of the nefarious "deep state." Or something. The thing is, most civil servants work so, so hard every day to make things better for Americans and safer for America. 2/
Civil servants are nonpartisan. They serve the constitution, not a president. Which means that any Administration coming in can rely on the civil service to help them make solid policy decisions. 3/
And as a result - rightly or wrongly - civil servants rarely join the policy and public debates on national policy matters. Because doing so could be considered partisan.

The practical upshot is that many civil servants can& #39;t defend their work or the vital role they play. 4/
So this enormous thing is happening that could have an enormous impact on the effective functioning of the United States Government, and the folks *most affected generally don& #39;t feel able to join the debate. 5/

*everyone is affected, but particularly civil servants.
I really hope that external voices get even more exercised about this issue. The civil service needs defending, IMHO. Time to defend this crown jewel of the United States government. 6/end.
