This is a short story about our relationship with our police officers in America.

/2 On May 27, 1991, 14-year-old Konerak Sinthasomphone briefly escaped from notorious serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer.
Briefly.
He was drugged, semi-coherent, and bleeding from the rectum.

/3 Milwaukee PD Officers John Balcerzak and Joseph T. Gabrish returned the boy, who was unable to speak coherently, to Dahmer. Dahmer convinced them that the boy was his 19-year-old lover.
/4 Gabrish and Balcerzak did not run Dahmer& #39;s information, which would have revealed he had been convicted of molesting the child& #39;s older brother. They did not investigate the odd smell they detected in Dahmer& #39;s apartment. Yes, it was the body of another victim.
/5 They returned the child to Dahmer.
Dahmer murdered, dismembered, and (according to some accounts) ate the child.

/6 The officers ignored multiple witnesses who urged them not to return the child to Dahmer and in fact threatened to arrest them if they interfered. https://toofab.com/2020/06/19/white-cops-handed-a-dying-14-year-old-back-to-jeffrey-dahmer/">https://toofab.com/2020/06/1...
/7 Afterwards, on a recording, the officers can be heard joking about having to be deloused, and laughing about how they had resolved "boy-boy" trouble.
/8 Surprisingly, they were fired. Unsurprisingly, under their union& #39;s contract with the city, they were reinstated by a judge who said their termination was "shocking" to a "sense of fairness." They were awarded $55,000 back pay. https://www.nytimes.com/1994/04/28/us/victory-for-two-in-dahmer-case.html">https://www.nytimes.com/1994/04/2...
/9 Officer Balcerzak leveraged resentment over his treatment -- the narrative of the liberal media biased against cops -- to become President of the Milwaukee Police Association.
