The article in question purported to celebrate the work of African & Haitian American photojournalists covering this summer’s BLM protests, but instead of paying them for a license to run their hard-won images, BuzzFeed opted to embed them all from Instagram for free.
Lens-based journalists, particularly those who put their lives on the line to do their job, deserve so much better. Far too often, hard working photographers & filmmakers see well-heeled media companies slash licensing budgets then pilfer work from their Instagram accounts.
Photographers: Facebook has affirmed that Instagram’s Terms of Use do NOT give others the right to embed your posts on their websites without further permission from you. @JamesBartolomei of @DuncanFirm are fighting to help end this harmful practice.
