Paul McCartney in “Paperback Writer” and “Rain” (1966) - a short thread!
The Beatles released “Paperback Writer” and “Rain” in June 1966. They're both Lennon-McCartney songs – Paul mainly wrote the former, and John the latter. Paul began writing “Paperback Writer” one day (possibly April 12 according to ‘Beatles ‘66’) on his way to John’s house.
Paul’s aunt had recently poked fun at John and Paul’s songwriting – “My Aunt Mill said, ‘Why do you write songs about love all the time? Can you write about a horse, or the summit conference, or something interesting?’ So I thought, ‘All right, Aunt Mill. I’ll show you.” - Paul
“I arrived at Weybridge and told John I had this idea of trying to write off to a publisher to become a paperback writer, and I said, ‘I think it should be written like a letter.’ I proceeded to write it just like a letter in front of him, occasionally rhyming it.” – Paul
“I remember John, his amused smile, saying, ‘Yes, that’s it, that’ll do.’ Quite a nice moment: ‘Hmm, I’ve done right! I’ve done well!’ We went upstairs and put the melody to it. John and I sat down and finished it all up, but it was tilted towards me, the original idea was mine.”
“Paperback Writer” was number one on Billboard Hot 100 for two weeks. “With “Paperback Writer” in 1966 they turn into a rock band. They sort of invent overdriven rock. There’s no other band that’s actually playing like that at that point.” – Elvis Costello
End of thread! 🤍 I might do a similar thread about “Rain” because it 100% deserves its own thread!
