every. single. election.

Young people are sooooooo interested in politics and say they intend to vote this time around, maybe this time they'll do it!!!!!

every. single. election.
The problem with this approach?

Young people have always been interested in politics. Interest has increased in recent years, but it's been high for a long time.

And youth turnout hasn't risen with interest.
Young people say they are interested in politics and that they intend to vote, but they are more than twice as likely to fail to follow through.
So, it's great that young people in 2020 are saying that they intend to vote at record numbers (it was already high to begin with).

It's great that we're seeing promising numbers in early /absentee voting.

And I wouldn't be surprised if we saw youth turnout increase some.
But the narrative about why young people don't vote is just wrong. They care about politics. They want to participate. They just don't follow through.
Also, it's kind of ridiculous that we only care about this problem en masse every 2-4 years.

It's kind of ridiculous that we leave it all up to political campaigns to solve structural problems with how we prepare young people to become active citizens.
We cross our fingers and pray that the campaign will be interesting enough. We hope that enough celebrities will come out and encourage young people to vote.

Rinse and repeat.
