As part of our social media focus on holiday hunger this week, today is 'did you know' day! We'll be posting lots of facts and figures that relate to food poverty and holiday hunger over the next few hours.
Did you know that while 1.4 million children are eligible for free school meals, 4.2 million children are living in poverty. That means that two thirds of children who are living in poverty do NOT qualify for or receive free school meals.
Did you know that three in ten working parents are in poverty compared to two in ten in 2010/2011?
Did you know that in Bath and North East Somerset, around 11% of school children qualified for free school meals in 2019? That's approximately 3200 children.
Did you know that 70% of children in poverty have parents who are in employment? With the rising costs of living and a lack of affordable housing, their income is just not enough to cover the basics. Poverty amongst this group is growing fast, and will continue to rise.
Did you know poverty rates for children and pensioners have increased in the last five years, after 20 years of decline before that?
Through this thread we've been highlighting some of the shocking and sad statistics around food poverty and holiday hunger. The good news, is that we can all do something to help.
