Their last album MAP OF THE SOUL 7 includes solo tracks by each of the members. Each of them has a story about the member's perspectives and their life experiences. Jimin came up with the concept of Filter, the lyrics are written by Bang Si-Hyuk and co written by 10 artists. ++

Before jumping into the lyric analysis, let me show ya'll the BTS interview with Spotify in which Jimin explained what made him bring up the concept of Filter.
Attached below is the literal meaning of Filter. Now I'll go by the lyrics and explain the meaning of them. ++

In the first verse, Jimin is seeking for attention. Attention of the person to whom he is dedicating the song, probably ARMYs. Jimin has always been very curious about us, he always wants to know us better! He interacts with us as if we are his real life friends. ++

Alright, coming back to the lyrics, the lyrics have this 'commanding tone'.
"put your phone down, look at me now" look how he is demanding for our attention. The tone in which the lyrics are expressed are enough for us to understand that there's no turning down, we have to ++

give him the attention that he wants. The tone he used to seek attention is a firm tone which doesn't allow any excuse or alteration. He wants to know us better because he feels dependent on us emotionally and physically. ++

Now, Jimin wants to open up with us, and tell us about his past, dark secrets, biggest fears because he wants us to know him better as a person, something more than an idol. He also wants to tell us his dreams, he wants to have some deep conversation with us. ++

Ok, let's concentrate on the tone of the sentence again, "open your closed eyes now" -- it is clearly 'suggestive tone' Why? Yes let me explain. Jimin is suggesting us to look at the world with his eyes. He has a desire to be very close with ARMYs. ++

you might be thinking, how can lyrics have certain tones, well they does. When lyricists write the lyrics, they have a certain story going on in their mind, the acting which goes on in their mind decides the tone. Lyrics do have some elements like language of tone / style. ++

This is the chorus of Filter. This is one of the most important parts of the song. Here, Jimin explains how he has different types of personalities. There's a subtle pinch of personification in the lyric -- "mix the colors in the palette and pick your filter" ++

'The colors in the palette' are personified as Jimin's different personalities. Just like while applying make-up, we mix different colors to look prettier, he wants to convince us that his different personalities make him look even beautiful. His different personalities makes ++

him look like himself. The conclusion is, he wants ARMYs to look at Jimin with his eyes, consider him as a normal talented person, which something even deeper than an idol. Not only does Jimin speaks about his own personality, he wants us to be ourselves. This is an important ++

point which must be noted.
Whenever Jimin releases a song, he always makes sure, the song is not only meant for him, the song doesn't only revolve around his own story, but the stories of everyone. Each and every lyric of his songs are written for him but they also serve as ++

a valuable message for everyone. That's one of the plus points in every Jimin songs, starting from 'Promise' to 'Filter'.
"I'm your filter that will change your world, put me in your heart." ~ this might seem as a commanding tone but actually it's a request or asking tone. ++

As you read the translation, it might seem as an honorific statement, but it's not. It sounds a little more friendly, intimate and pestering. As I've said in the beginning, even though the song is written with the collaborative effort of Bang PD and many other song writers, ++

the concept was devised by Jimin, himself, for he wants to continually show us his diverse sides so that we would always have different perspectives about him. He wants us to know him as Jimin, and love him for being himself, and not the idol he is. ++

Here, yet again, he describes his love for us. The lyrics are framed and sung by Jimin in such a way, that could also be read as something erotic. It actually depends on the reader's mind. If you're into sensual stuff, each line would sound complex, but if your mind is ++

innocent like mine ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) then they would sound like playful tease on the ways one can apply filters on Jimin. Coming back to the lyric, "I can be your Genie, how bout' Aladdin?" ~ Genie, interesting huh? The 'genie' reference probably means he wants to make all our ++

dreams come true. Jimin wants to take care of us, he again wants to come close to us and fulfill our dreams, our wishes. "You can pick and choose me" ~ why 'pick' and 'choose'? There's an interesting thing here! 'Pick' here resembles that Jimin is asking us to 'pick' him as ++

our lover, our close friend and 'choose' refers that Jimin wants us to love him and 'choose' him as our forever. He wants us to promise that we will stay together forever. Again here's a slight presence of commanding tone because there's no turning back from this promise.

in the second pre-chorus analysis, you might differ from my opinion, but this thread is completely based on my own interpretation.
The very first line, "I'll embrace you like your dream" ~ this is a tone where he is showing his will or determination of doing something. ++

He wants to hold us tight in his arms and protect us, help us fulfill our dreams.
Here, Jimin shows how he has extricated himself out of the matrix of typical Busan-ness. Jimin is clearly not afraid to show his sensitive side, express his emotions or reveal his playful side ++

in front of us, which makes him a remarkable exception from the 'typical Machiavellian smarty-pants'. Jimin is certainly not a typical Busan man.
"It's a concert spec"~ All human beings change with time, similarly here, Jimin represents the idea that it's absolutely boring ++

to not let yourself change, to not sometimes get out of your comfort zone. Only in this way, the love between us and Jimin can be spontaneous, natural and strong.
"I'll be new every day for you" ~ the determining tone. Jimin is using casual language through the entire song ++

The way he has arranged the lyrics and sung the song seems really intimate and close. He is trying to show us his dreams, his resolution, his future through his eyes. He wants him to be our future so that we can love each other forever. 'Filter'is certainly a song of self ++

confidence. Jimin is the only artist who can exude the warmth and carefreeness that was required to won Filter. Jimin is telling us, how hard he has worked on his appearance and crafts, so that whatever we like of him, whether it be his singing or his dancing, him being funny, ++

or being cute, he will give everything to us! Moving on to the (bridge + chorus); loving someone gives us happiness right? Similarly, loving ARMYs is his happiness. He feels the real happiness while loving us which makes him like a child who just got his favourite candy. ++

I hope y'all will agree with me here, a child's love is the most innocent and sincerest one you have ever come across.
No matter how different the filters are, they are parts of himself, his different personalities. The more he explores his own personalities, he loves them. ++

And he wants us to love them as well, he wants us to love and appreciate each and every personality (filter) of his. Now he feels happy and satisfied for who he is which is referred as 'brand new filter'. He never hated any of his personalities earlier, he did accept all his ++

personalities (both good and bad) and now he is ready to shower all his love upon his beloved ARMYs! He also says ''I'm a brand new filter, something you've yet to experience."~ we are yet to see another side of Jimin and that's probably the best side of him, according to him. ++

Back to the outro, "we will be new, overlay me on your heart"~ determining tone again! He wants us to be new and young. He wants us to change to something new for better, he wants us to come closer to him, understand him deeply, and accept all his filters and love him. ++

When I listened to the song, I was really happy because finally there's a song which will make me love all my personalities, which I never valued before. In conclusion, Jimin is absolutely ready for a new beginning with ARMYs! He promises us, that he will be with us and we ++

together will overcome all the turbulence in the future. He can see his future and through Filter he assures us that he will never give up on his dreams, and will always stay being himself.
"Filter" is one of the deepest BTS songs I've ever heard! It's certainly not a ++

typical love song, this song has lots of deep meanings which I wrote in the thread. "Filter" showcases all the transformations Jimin had gone through in his life. Jimin wasn't pretty confident about his personalities earlier, so he preferred not to be open with ARMYs ++

he wasn't confident enough to accept his real self, because he was too much dependent upon others' approval and acceptance. But, later on, he realized, in order to love someone else, he need to accept himself first. When he finally accepts his 'brand new filter' he feels ready ++

to have a better beginning with his beloved ARMYs. All I can say, as long as we, ARMYs are with Jimin, he will be the happiest person on this earth. I'll be doing a vocal analysis of Filter as well soon. Let me know how you felt about this analysis
