Please, never tell a depressed person that they are a burden, no matter the context, no matter how indirect.

And while we are at it, - a thread:
Don't tell a depressed person to smile more. Don't tell them that smiling at the mirror in the morning will automatically make one happier.
Don't tell a depressed person that they are invalid and you don't take them seriously because people in other parts of the world are hungry and they are not depressed.
Of course, there is hunger and poverty, and it is terrible; but that doesn't make depression unimportant.
Don't tell a depressed person that it will be okay once they start to study or a new work. Don't tell them they just need a job and then they don't have time to be depressed.
Don't tell a depressed person that lying on bed all day doesn't help. That eating junk food doesn't help.
We know that. But we can't do anything else.
Don't tell a depressed person that taking medication is unnatural and doesn't help. Don't tell them that you think antidepressants are not necessary.
Believe me, if they were unnecessary, we wouldn't take them. They change us. Even our personality. Even after quitting.
Don't tell a depressed person that, while they're already home all day, they could clean or cook. There is a reason people are home all day. There is a reason people can't clean or feed themselves.
Please ask a depressed person what you can do for them. Sometimes it is just a hug or sitting next to them in silence.
Offer to go with them to a doctor or a psychiatrist. Offer to set up the appointment and to accompany them.
Offer to google/ research for possibilities.
