THREAD 1/5: International Criminal Court decision on #Rohingya victims’ request to hold hearings in #Bangladesh.

/5 Judges recognised victims could initiate this process for an assessment of hearings outside The Hague. Rejected Prosecution’s objections. Recognised location of hearings is something the victims have an interest in & that they should have their views heard on this question.
/5 The judges recognised the importance of “bringing justice closer” to victims and witnesses and to the place where the events occurred.
/5 The judges consider lawyers’ request for an assessment from the Registry has already been fulfilled by the report which the Registry prepared. Any more detailed assessment is not likely to be possible at this point because of COVID.
/5 They say that a decision on the appropriate location for hearings should wait until there is a matter before the Court which requires a hearing. The judges will keep under consideration the possibility to hold hearings in the region as the proceedings develop further.
