You know what’s interesting to me about the “SAns don’t save” conversation:

Even if you could save some money, it usually means you have to live like an animal to maintain the practice. They are okay with that instead of prioritising how to achieve dignified living while saving.
So I must starve but at least I’m saving???
The discourse around employment is also very problematic. It cannot be that the goal is to be able to say people are employed, but the jobs afford them lives that are hardly better than those unemployed. Also, the quality of the jobs matter.
I can see a situation in SA where we can say we have a 100% employment rate but people are still impoverished because the jobs are low paying and low quality. This economy is built on exploitation and inequality. That’s the issue, not employment figures.
