.5 Recent #Covid19 numbers in 🇱🇧 are plateauing, suggesting the viral spread is slowing. Though some suggest insufficient testing is masking the rise in cases, the plateauing of the test positivity rate, ICU admissions, and deaths, does suggest the slowing of the spread is real.
.5 However, a test positivity rate which is still above 11% means the virus is not under control. Furthermore, a critical bed occupancy rate above 85% means we are unable to accommodate any rapid rise in cases. #Covid19 comes in waves. Will 🇱🇧 face a wave soon?
.5 The current strategy is to restrict viral spread by local measures while expanding hospital capacity to mitigate the consequences of infections. The unpopular total lockdown is being avoided while businesses and schools open. The measures keep improving, but this takes time.
.5 Yet, the increase in economic and social activity encouraged by the plateau in the Covid numbers will facilitate the spread of the virus. A new wave is thus started. The current situation should be considered a window of opportunity. What we do now will dictate future course.
.5 Measures such as wearing face masks by all, stricter border control, better zoning including big cities, and better testing and tracing, have been well discussed by the authorities and experts lately. If not implemented soon, the numbers will start rising again.
