Tonight I'm thinking A LOT... in 2016, almost 3 years before I came out, my dad voted for Trump. I was appalled and furious for many reasons but none of which related to myself. This year, he was planning to vote for him again. (1/5)
So I mailed him a letter that said we can't have a relationship if he does it again. I knew he wouldn't listen to the myriad of reasons why, but I hoped he'd listen to one. That he'd be voting to support an administration and nominations that seek to harm my rights.(2/5)
I laid out the facts to him, from specific policies to SCOTUS decisions and the GOP platform. To my pleasant surprise my dad agreed that he would not vote for them again, that I taught him things he didn't know, and that he supports my sexuality and personal freedoms. (3/5)
I didn't think it would turn out this way. I'm thankful it did. Our relationship is still rocky for many reasons, but this brought me hope that with the right approach I can make him see the world from my viewpoint. (4/5)
My heart aches for those who cannot have at least a tolerable relationship with any or all of their family over their sexuality or things that have been politicized (but shouldn't be), but I get it. I was so close to being there. (5/5)
