It’s not just that Democrats no longer have an incentive to hold back. If they don’t regain power and expand the courts, you get a country whose government is wildly — to a hostile degree, even — unrepresentative of its people and its values.
If you’re a conservative with a little c, that state of affairs should scare the shit out of you.
The courts are now captured by an extremist minority appointed by a political party that has literally no coherent values to speak of. The Senate is more or less an antebellum artifact that boils down to a giant piece of hereditary gerrymandering.
None of this is tenable. People are out of work. They’re scared, they’re desperate, and they have time on their hands. This is textbook. Like, the really bad part of the history textbook.
I am not an optimist. I do not believe the arc of history necessarily bends towards justice.
But I know that the reason the Republicans obsess over the culture war is *because they have lost the culture war.* The country is not on their side. The future is not on their side. How can you expect to keep your grip? Are you just going to keep tear gassing the future?
