This thread yesterday got the @nytimes to remove the tweet of a right-wing disinfo guy from an article. Ever since then, his fans (and a fair number of suspicious accounts) have been flooding my mentions with all kinds of ugly stuff. https://twitter.com/nickmartin/status/1320578231376834560
There have been a few genuine neo-Nazis in the mix. But mostly it's been your typical right-wing derangement, like people calling me a pedophile or a fa**ot or other stupid things.
I've dealt with worse on this beat, so none of that really bothers me. Plus, I'm a straight cis white dude, and the trolling is fairly tame compared to what other people on Twitter face frequently.
What's clear, though, is that the far right is desperate for disinfo peddlers to feed their worldview. Even mild pushback is met with vicious attacks. Proximity to the election probably makes it worse.
Also, for all of the complaints about Big Tech censoring the right, the users in that sphere get away with A LOT. Twitter rewards engagements, so the leaders of these campaigns, who often have blue checkmarks, wind up with more clout the nastier their followers get.
Essentially the leaders are incentivised to whip their followers into a frenzy.

Anyway, none of this is new to anyone who has been following it for any length of time. But it has been interesting to see it play out in real time.
Also, if you've tweeted nice things at me in the past 20 hours and I haven't replied, that's why. Sorry!
