You& #39;d be surprised by the real number of Black conservatives. Visit any Black Barbara shop and you& #39;d be surprised. We just don& #39;t have a political party that embraces our conservative values and respects us as five-fifths of a person.
It& #39;s been my experience that leaders within my community espouse many of the core tenents of conservativism. What& #39;s difficult to accept is that the government has put its thumb on the scale for 400-years and now wants everyone to start from where they are now. /2
This is the debate at the core of the Civil Rights movement and laws. It& #39;s not difficult to understand the math of the disadvantage Black families encounter. The challenge is many conservatives believe our disadvantage shouldn& #39;t be their responsibility to balance. /3
The belief is that the size of the pie is limited. If you give Black families more opportunities, somehow there& #39;s less pie. We can see this in much of the immigration policy of the day. Somehow allowing immigrants to come in and add value somehow destroys opportunity /4
It& #39;s ironic as President Reagan preached rising tides lifts all boats. It was just preached from a position of giving those with more even more. Somehow we don& #39;t trust the poor to convert opportunity into economic growth. /5
Those in power don& #39;t see any other way to grow the pie other than the way they& #39;ve experienced personally. They are the smartest and most capable based on their self-assessment. /6
Talk with a Black family that has created generational wealth. You& #39;ll commonly find that they are religiously conservative, long history of education, military service, and landowners. My best friend just inherited his childhood home from his veteran father and nurse mom. /7
Of course, there are exceptions. I know plenty of liberal Black people that have also enjoyed success. My point is that we aren& #39;t the monolith that& #39;s portrayed in the media. The Black community is as diverse as any other in America. We just have less political options. /8
Remember, my mom had her first child at 14 and me at 15. As a senior, she now makes the most she has ever made in her life. She works for her entrepreneur son (my youngest brother). She& #39;s also a Muslim. America is an amazing idea. Go vote and make it real! /9
