Originalism, a lesson.
If you actually read the Constitution (almost never done) you'd find that it isn't a set of laws to pass and not pass. It isn't a guarantee of slavery (behind the 1st 20 years) and it isn't a bunch of 18th century proscriptions.
It's just a design.
The Constitution says, all laws will be made by Congress. It will be constructed like this. Here are qualifications for membership. Laws will be enforced by a President. Here are requirements to hold that job.
3. Disputes will be judged by a judiciary. It will be based on a supreme (lower case in original) Court. It will be filled like this.
Congress may make other courts as they see fit.
There are instructions for modifying (amending) the Constitution.
4. The original Constitution specifically states that the President can take no money from the federal government or any state government except his salary.
Expressly says that.
An originalist would have demanded His Madnesty's impeachment on January 21st, 2017, because
5. the night of the 20th he required the federal government to pay him money to house and feed his guard detail.
Any originalist can see this at a blink.
6. Given that the power of amendment is in the original, we can count amendments as original.
Not just the first ten. They were not in the "originally" ratified document. So - all or none. Originalism.
7. That said, anyone who says the right to keep and bear arms is Constitutional but the link to a government trained and managed militia isn't is a liar.
Plain and simple.
Not an originalist. A liar.
Scalia wasn't an originalist, he was a liar.
8. Mcconnell, and hundreds of scoundrels before him, have slowly, patiently, corrupted the clear language of the original Constitution, but that doesn't make it what they say it is.

9. about how those old slaveholders created this antiquated slavery machine. That's simply not true. They gave slavery 20 years to be dealt with. Their descendents failed. They still wrote that deadline in there. It's not their fault we're still a racist nation. It's ours.
10. I have turned away from the original Constitution, not because it punted the slavery that had been here 200 years already down the road another 20 years, but because it treated states as having sovereign interests equal to individual humans.
The Senate. Electors. That crap.
11. The 15th Amendment was an honest attempt at a voting rights act. Just like the laws passed in the 60s, it got twisted into nothing, but it was an honest attempt.
The mess we are in today is not the fault of the original Constitution. It's the fault of latter day liars.
12. And this matters. We've got to quit letting them claim the Constitution. Flaws and all, it's still there. Instead of taking their bait and arguing against the "original" Constitution, call them out for their lies. And read the Preamble, the *original* "Why this government."
We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this
Constitution for the United States of America.
