We saw this post on Instagram and honestly wanted to address it because while we mostly agree, there are a few things on the list that ignores use outside of colonial context.

First of all, police, capitalism, nationalism, and whiteness 100% belong here, no way to decolonize.

So lets talk about the rest.

Voting:
Tribes/clans having community votes is not inharently colonial, it is a way to see what will best help the community. It is decolonized as it fights the systems of control that are in place that try to remove individual community.

Academia:
This comes down to an individuals beliefs on what is and isn't academia. To us, an elder teaching us traditional ways and passing on knowledge is decolonial academia as it involves research and education. @KimTallBear is a great example of steps to decolonial acedamia.

Museums:
Now, at first sight, this is simply colonial violence. We get that. But we believe that Indigenous owned and led museums where our peoples choose what to display to help educate about our various cultures would be how to decolonize museums. It must be by our choice.

Non-Profits:
This one on the list hit close to home as @DissociatedInCa is attempting to eventually get not for profit status, but our mission is to not compromise on our focus on decolonization and Indigenous sovereignty. This means we will work close with Native communities

And aim to hire staff that is reccomended by the local Elders and community in any of our locations that are closest to them. We will focus on having safe places for traditional practice and all staff will have to be trained in treating dissociation that is rooted in generational

Trauma.

So for us, to say all non-profits can't be decolonized ignores ones that aim to be Indigenous driven and are committed to listening and working with Indigenous communities.

But yeah, that's our little rant on this. Sorry for the word salad but it felt needed.
