We're at @UNC_Water_Inst and listening to talk about #COVID19 testing in #wastewater. Interesting talk cautioning some optimism about just how much we can do with testing wastewater for COVID-19.

Here are a few key takeaways:
-Sewer system data is noisy! There's a lot of stuff going on in there...
-What do we actually do once we see the data?
-If we can detect the virus, which may not help much all told, what else can we do?
#uncwaterandhealth
Can we find a way to segment different parts of sewers to help target treatment and mitigation with smaller areas of communities? It's possible!

We're still going!
Only 23% of #CostaRica is covered by sanitary sewers, so this kind of #wastewater surveillance doesn't cover everyone. And heavy rain in the tropics affects the samples, making it hard to try #COVID19 testing.
#uncwaterandhealth
In #SanFrancisco, @UCBerkeley is trying a regional #wastewater monitoring in some targeted ways. Their sewer testing shows a slight lead time to #COVID19 testing case results. They also compare regions to assess the burden of disease in different communities.
#uncwaterandhealth
@nyuniversity also tested something similar in #NYC at 14 #wastewater plants. They see an uptick of #COVID19 cases in some areas w/ testing case spikes. BUT! They find different mechanisms for testing can change results a bit. Not all methods work everywhere.
#UNCWaterandHealth
@CDCgov has supplied national #wastewater surveillance system guidelines as a useful tool for diseases. B/c:
-Effective pool of community info
Captures asymptomatic, too
-Not influenced by healthcare access
-Health depts are the key user of this data
#UNCWaterandHealth
Still @CDCgov - 15 jurisdictions are working on using #wastewater surveillance for #COVID19. There's a variety of approaches. Limitations must be repeated. Resources are limited. Negative tests don't mean a community is free of disease. Etc.
#UNCWaterandHealth
In #India, lots happening...they've found a 2- or 4-week heads-up on #COVID19 outbreaks with #wastewater surveillance. The frequency of samples, locations, methods, etc. are important to note, too.
@flush_wash is running to another thing, but we're happy to pass the baton of sharing the interesting tales on this thread with @COVIDPoops19 !
