The frieze on the Athenaeum on Pall Mall is a copy from the Parthenon, Athens. The private member's club, designed by Decimus Burton, was founded in 1824 soon after the Parthenon sculptures arrived at the @BritishMuseum in 1816. 4/
Sir Robert Smirke, architect of the British Museum, also designed Canada House, formerly the Royal College of Physicians near Trafalgar Square. As at the museum, Smirke makes much use of ionic columns. 5/
William Hogarth set up his Academy on St Martin’s Lane in 1735 from the group of artists who met at Old Slaughter's Coffee House at the top of this ancient street. Drawings & prints by these artists, including Gainsborough and Hogarth, can now be found in the BM. 6/
At Princes Circus on Shaftesbury Ave look up to see the 'tower' of St George’s, Bloomsbury by Nicholas Hawksmoor. The design is based on the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Original sculptures from the mausoleum are in the Museum. 7/
