THREAD:

Looking for movies to watch this Halloween? Yer man Scullion has been a horror lover for decades, so here are my picks from what's currently available on Netflix UK (Amazon Prime to come later if there's demand).

In alphabetical order...
Ash vs Evil Dead (2015-2016)

A brilliant and funny way to bring a classic film series to the modern day. There were three seasons and there are only two here, but it's still worth a watch. Obviously those who loved the original Evil Dead films will get the most out of it.
The Cabin in the Woods (2012)

Cracking horror comedy that takes the usual "teens spend a weekend in a summer cabin" formula and completely turns it onto its arse. Yer man Hemsworth's in it too.
Child's Play (2019)

A decent reboot of the classic horror series that does clever things with a more modern Chucky doll. The doll effects look a bit off and it's not as good as the originals but it's still a fun little movie nonetheless
Child's Play 2 (1990)

If it's old-school Chucky you're looking for, this is the best from the original trilogy because it doesn't spend half the film getting to the reveal we all know by now. Silly, fun stuff
Christine (1983)

You can't have a Halloween marathon without a John Carpenter film. This is the only one on Netflix UK but it's still one of the best 'possessed car' movies you'll ever see.
Curse of Chucky (2013)

If you want a serious Child's Play movie but you aren't interested in the remake, you really should give this massively overlooked film a go. Not a lot of people gave it much attention but it genuinely made Chucky scary again while going into his backstory
Dead Set (2008)

What happens if there's a zombie apocalypse and the people in the Big Brother house don't know? That's the plot behind this fantastic horror comedy written by Charlie Brooker. If you've ever wanted to see Davina McCall get eaten alive, then you're in luck.
Freddy vs Jason (2003)

I'm an unashamedly huge fan of both the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th series, so having both their villains together is just ridiculously good fun from start to finish. Kelly Rowland drops a spot of homophobia, so watch out for that
Friday the 13th (2009)

The Nightmare on Elm Street remake is on Netflix and isn't worth bothering with, but this one was a decent (if excessively violent) take on the Friday the 13th series. A good slasher, even if it does seem to enjoy the pain a bit too much.
Halloween (2018)

This fantastic sequel from a couple of years ago pretends that only the first movie happened and does away with all the shite that happened in between. Jamie Lee Curtis is absolutely phenomenal in it and worth watching alone for her being a badass.
Hereditary (2018)

This one is dark as fuck and there are plenty of triggers in it (most notably extreme family trauma at the unexpected death of a loved one). If you can cope with that, the less you know about it the better.
Scream (2015-2016)

No, not the movies but the MTV series from a few years back. Instead of following the events of the films it does its own thing, doing a fun job of bringing the story to the WhatsApp generation. There are two seasons here: the third was unrelated anyway.
Seed of Chucky (2004)

Sorry, couldn't resist a final Chucky one. This one is easily the silliest film in the series, in which Chucky and his bride Tiffany find their long-lost son but because Glen/da has no genitals they fight over what gender to raise them as. Such a daft movie
Session 9 (2001)

Such an underrated film. David Caruso runs an asbestos removal firm and is working on an abandoned psychiatric hospital when shit very much begins to go down. If you want a film that's creepy rather than jumpy or gory, this is the one for you.
Unfriended (2014)

Finally, this one was a love-it-or-hate-it released but I'm firmly in the former camp. A modern day ghost story told in an extremely clever way: the entire film plays out on someone's Mac desktop. Make sure your TV is big enough to read the text and you're in.
And that's it! Hope those help you decide what to watch over the next few days. Obviously that isn't every good horror film on Netflix: it's only the ones I've seen and personally recommend.

Amazon Prime to come if folk want it!
