Last week I was in a fun thread about career advice. I'm one of those people who will hand it out, whether you ask or not. Here's my top 5 for #gamesUR but I think it applies more broadly. 1/6
Communication is part of the job. It gives others a view into the impact you have. Instead of trying to work at 120%, work at 90% and spend another 10% communicating up the chain and out to your stakeholders. It will add up to way more, and you won't burn out. 2/6
Throw yourself a parade. UR can be hesitant to claim victory. Or we need the exact right data to show attribution. Guess what? Nobody else worries about that. So tell everybody you did a great job and move on. 4/6
Your job is to get your boss' boss promoted. So think about what you can do, or are doing to help your management chain. Sounds a bit sleazy but it will force you to see how your work rolls up to the organizational level. 3/6
Put your manager on the hook for your career. If your manager is any good, they realize it's their job to get you promoted. So make it clear what you want, and make it clear that you expect them to help you get there. 5/6
All the stuff that gets in the way of you "doing your job"? That is the job. That's what you get paid for. Executing on amazing research is just the start. Everything else is what it means to be an applied researcher trying to build something. 6/6
