I'm writing a guide to Dorothy Heathcote's conventions of dramatic action at the moment, this thread is an extract from the part exploring Convention 8: the use of images to represent people, places, or situations. [1/n]
1. The teacher shows the students an image of Captain Scott, “I thought you might be interested in having a look at this photograph taken many years ago. I will tell you more about the person in the picture in a minute, but first have a close look and see what you notice.”[2/n]
This is an invitation to look at the image without worrying about who the man is or what is going on. Try it yourself. Stick to what you can see - rows of leather-bound books, a bed, a jacket (maybe navy officer?), a union jack flag in a rack beside a row of pipes, etc.[3/n]
