This is why China has us nailed. In 2021 (the 100th Anniversay of the CCP) they are gearing up to change the narrative from removing poverty (i.e. done) to tackling inequality in a vibrant economy. We have no strategic response, we have failed to play the game effectively -> https://twitter.com/tristandross/status/1320672809320894467
It is our perception of "economic success" which has enabled us to champion our values of the west including our interpretation of "democracy" and "markets" and impose this on other collectives. This will all become painfully unraveled as our collective turns in on itself.
It will sound such an innocent idea - a focus on reducing inequality. President Xi has already laid the groundwork but that innocent idea will turn the West on itself. Never before have we needed great leaders to bring the best out of our collectives. We need our Deng Xiaoping.
Unfortunately, as much I look, I have seen none. I've seen plenty who think that "they" can solve it, they "they" have the vision, that "they" have the strategy ... all weak leaders. Maybe our Deng Xiaoping will emerge. I'll keep looking and hoping.
X : Do you think our Deng Xiaoping exists?
Me : Yes. But she probably lives on a council estate and has never been close to a playing field in Eton. That's our problem, we're not even looking in the right places.
