Matt Hancock, the Health Secretary, said "a vaccine is not there yet" but when asked if some people could receive a vaccine this year he replied: "I don't rule that out but that is not my central expectation."
Mr Hancock further clarified that the Government was preparing to roll out the vaccine with his expectation it would be available by the first half of 2021.
Mr Hancock's full answer, "we want to be ready in case everything goes perfectly but it's not my central expectation that we'll be doing that this year but the programme is progressing well, we're not there yet."
Currently, The University of Oxford is developing a vaccine with promising results. The vaccine is said to produce an immune response amongst all age groups with adverse reactions low among the elderly.
