Here’s the reality of the value of money leaving Ireland in ecommerce transactions. I went searching for the figures in May during lockdown 1.0 and reached out to the folk at @StatistaCharts who kindly gave this to me for a course I was delivering.
So what this tells us is that online spending in many areas of Irish life is now the norm and growing.
The next point we need to consider is the nuanced behaviour of online shopping. Consumers have 3 traits that retailers & online service providers need to deliver on.
1️⃣ Demanding - want the best, the fastest, best value, highest reviewed products and services
2️⃣ Curious - want long form content, ratings and reviews to help make an informed purchasing decision
3️⃣ Impatient - delivery and returns matter in terms of speed and ease
So while the government encourage, and retailers do their best to get online and then figure out how to we’ve the connected consumer, there’s another reality.
The big retailers have the stock, the fulfilment, the marketing, the regional warehouses to meet the expectations of the connected consumer.
Digital is a long game and the quick wins come in fewer case studies. I think the communications and support needed could be based on “how do we create the Amazon of Ireland? The Ireland Department Store that has govt incentives and support both for the retailer and the consumer?
I know the market decides, but at the moment the pandemic is deciding along with Dunnes trending here last night as it the row of multiples V independent retailers tweetered out. 🤷‍♀️
