/8 As Covid19 has shown starkly, there's no point in having regulations and laws unless they are enforced (Barnard Castle). A shocking new report out today from @Unchecked_UK shows all too clearly how enforcement has been consigned to the dustbin over the last 10 years.
Thread.
/8 The UK's Enforcement Gap 2020 https://www.unchecked.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/10/The-UKs-Enforcement-Gap-2020.pdf brings together data from a variety of sources and issues, from wildlife protection to food safety, fly tipping to water quality. Here are some of the infographics.

Firstly massive funding cuts to regulators budgets.
/8 Massive cuts to staff across Government agencies and Local Authorities working on environmental regulation.
/8 A catastrophic decline in data collection, monitoring, compliance and prosecutions. It's back to the Wild West days out there.
/8 Do you know how safe the food you're eating is? No, you don't because compliance and enforcement activity has fallen off a cliff.
/8 and departments which are supposed to be checking food safety are running on skeleton staff.
/8 Just as well there's not going to be a flood of new food imports with much lower production standards about to hit the shops. Oh wait.... #chlorinatedchicken
/8 Read the report to find out more. Please share widely, write articles etc. Voters, of all colours, have shown time and again they support regulation but we are in a deregulatory death spiral. FYI @GeorgeMonbiot @henrymance @DeborahMeaden
