I don’t think anyone believes that OMT member Illy truly thinks it is in the best interest of children’s well-being to not close schools for a couple of weeks which would help curb the pandemic. Schools remain open to keep the controlled spread at a sufficiently high pace. https://twitter.com/nieuwsuur/status/1320466820864856064
Children would become socially isolated, risk abuse or becoming obese - a number of arguments are used. But we are only talking about a holiday extension of a few weeks.

These are not arguments made in good faith.
3/ Closing schools would probably only be required for a couple of weeks. It’s about opening schools *safely*. https://twitter.com/tonvanhaperen/status/1320632965479702528

But here is the thing. They don't want safe schools, schools are the turbines of the epidemic. This is due to a line of thinking underlying the Dutch approach: #HerdImmunity.

It is easy to understand:

Here's a translation of @MarcBonten's article from last May, which he still stands by:

"the chosen strategy of catching the first wave and then controlling the spread reduces the build-up of group immunity."

Ostensibly, reaching #HerdImmunity through infections is an 'effect', not a 'goal'.

Semantics.

Immunity buildup is still considered desirable. More immunity leads to fewer necessary restrictions, is the line of thinking.

If immunity wanes, the epidemic needs to speed up.

If you think infections lead to immunity as a a natural, 'free' brake on the pandemic, as an 'investment' which supposedly allow you to ease restrictions in the future, you have created an incentive to sacrifice public health for 'the economy'.

The resistance against containment is due to hidden (yet easily discernible, if you read carefully) desire to keep virus circulation high. To infect as many (mostly younger) people as quickly as possible. It's pretty much an open secret, but it's taboo.
