*cracks knuckles* the thread you were all waiting for..
- why luna lovegood is on the autism spectrum, or autistic-coded ; a thread made by an autistic person!!
- fancam made by @wrackspurts <3
- first of all: she was always perceived as strange and “loony”. typical ableism of neurotypicals who don’t understand us. this is the throughout the whole series - she gets bullied, made fun of, avoided, and she has very few friends (whom she cherishes deeply)
they’d steal her things, call her “loony lovegood”, point & laugh at her whenever she does Anything, just because she’s different. sounds like something an autistic person would suffer from
besides that, she was very creative, and often believed in things that were “childish” or mythical - like nargles, crumple-horned snorkacks, etc.
- luna reads magazines upside down and writes like this - a lot of autistic people do this, as well, and i have no idea why we do this actually but i think it’s because we percieve the world differently (i do this too and trust me i have no idea why it’s just fun)
- autistic people are sometimes noted to “walk differently” than neurotypicals: i do this and i have no idea why either but i think it’s like a stim to me? i walk like this when i’m stimming because it’s like i am Stimming With My Whole Body™️ and it makes me happy so
- this pattern of speech: if you sit with an autistic person (or maybe it’s just me and luna) you’ll probably get a headache or just go “...wtf” after One conversation because yes we talk like this. i say shit like “omg the weathers nice! i love johnny depp. meow” too
“[...]as Luna forgot players' names & went off on tangents such as speculating that Smith, who was unable to maintain procession of the Quaffle for longer than a minute, was suffering from "Loser's Lurgy", or saying how a cloud was interestingly shaped”
- she has very few friends, from what we see in the books. most autistic people only have like 1-4 friends at school, not only because people think we’re weird, but because we just like us some alone-time. but we do love and cherish our friends Very Much, like this painting-
in luna’s room of her friends, and like this quote + i like this quote about voldemort she says to harry bc like, yk we think “outside the box” like nts say, and things we say are often perceived as “dark” or some shit idk like we’re undercover villains (i do like that luna au)-
but most of the time we’re just noticing things that others don’t, or are just way too honest- harry notes this in the books:
“Luna was once again demonstrating her usual knack of speaking of uncomfortable truths; he had never met anyone quite like her.” -
autistic people are known to be very honest or “straightforward”. we don’t hide anything, or use double-meanings, just like luna!
@ my point about her noticing things others don’t (not only these scenes - there’s also the diadem scene, the “we’ll fly, of course” scene, and yea + “Luna correctly observed that people expected Harry to associate with "cooler" people”)
from the wiki:
A prime example of Luna’s perceptiveness was when she pointed out the ironically drastic measures taken against Sirius Black when he escaped Azkaban, but when ten Death Eaters (including Bellatrix Lestrange) escaped, barely any measures were taken to recapture them
- not really about her but she marries newt scamander’s grandson(?) + newt is canonically autistic. autistic people tend to look for people/family members they can relate to and/or are also autistic when choosing their s/o or friends!! as a treat, look at this cute fanart of them
- p.s. neville might also be autistic-coded, which is why she chose Him as a best friend as well!
- she became a magizoologist, later on, like newt: autistic people tend to have special connections to animals, and are subsequently more likely to become zoologists, or maybe they lead an animal shelter, or something of the sort
- “At one point, while under the influence of gnome saliva, Luna started dancing by herself, twirling on the dance floor with her arms raised.”
- she walks in her sleep (that’s why she wears shoes to bed)
- this picture
- i’ll just leave y’all to figure this out like. come on
- many autistic people are good at riddles, hence “She took Harry to the Ravenclaw common room, answering the riddle, "What came first, the Phoenix or the flame?", with "A circle has no beginning."”
- this is just me projecting but we often have our own strategies for school too:
“Luna's demeanour and voice were often distant and dreamy; she would drift away from a conversation she did not find interesting. “However, whenever someone made fun of her father or his magazine The Quibbler, the dreamy quality in her voice would vanish and be replaced by one of
- steel, and she would immediately become very angry.”
“Luna seemed to have enjoyed artistic pursuits in her free time; her house was filled with various things that she painted.”
anyway i’m running out of space in this thread so i’ll just leave y’all some nice articles from autistic people (i think) that relate to luna (and one from evanna talking about her autistic fans although we don’t support her):
and that’s it (you’re free to add anything in the replies/qrts if you think i missed smth) @ neurodivergent luna stans/kins i love you all have a great day and luna would love us too trust me!!!! *hugs y’all*
