It’s important that we keep reminding people, especially younger scientists, that churn/turnover of people is baked into our current system by design. Leaving - whether by choice or by force - is a failure of the system, not the individuals.
And I know it gets under the skin of many senior people when we talk about this stuff openly (because… yay, science!) but we owe it to students to be open and honest about the challenges ahead. They deserve to be able to make big decisions armed with information and eyes open.
