Hi AS4SANers! Glad to be the second curator to takeover AS4SAN Twitter! I’m Sherry Chen, an early career researcher focusing on how the #cerebellum gets involved in cognitive performance. This week I will be talking about some interesting findings in this field. @Sherry_YuChen 1/6
The human #cerebellum accounts for only 10% of the total brain mass, but it contains about 4 times more neurons (69 billion) than the cerebral cortex (about 16 billion neurons), accounting for 80% of all the neurons in the human brain. 2/6
Interestingly, the size of the cerebellum relative to the rest of the brain has shown to increase through the evolution of apes, including humans. The cerebellum has also been correlated with the development of cognitive functions in humans. 3/6
The #cerebellum has long been believed to simply contribute to motor coordination. Recent research has demonstrated that it also plays a role in #cognition, such as attention, memory, and even higher-level cognition, such as reasoning, planning, and #SocialCognition. 4/6
Can people live without cerebellum? Come back tomorrow for the answers!
