Some generalized art advice for motion designers and CG artists coming up in this short thread. These are things I look for/think about when making my work or looking at others. These aren’t rules, just some of my own thinking.
C+C+C = 🌈. Concept + Composition + Color. Get all three and you will be successful.
Macro motion/details and micro motion/details... Great motion with simulations in particular are a combination of large scale motion mixed with small scale motion. Make sure the large blocking works, then get into the micro stuff. Same with lighting, textures, etc.
Study real cinematography. If you can’t name at least 5 famous cinematographers right now who inspire you, do some research. Camera and lighting should be more than just a thing that photographs your design. It should be part of the design.
To me, a good motion piece has some element of storytelling in it. Even in abstraction there can be an idea of change or evolution. I think a motion piece should be more than a moving design. It should be something that has to be in motion to to be complete.
Keep visual hierarchy in mind. If everything is important, then nothing is important. In other words, give some focus to your piece.
This one is directed at students... the desire to create something that emulates work by hot designers is understandable, but I think you are better served to resist that and find your own voice. Most CDs and ADs would rather hire a so-so original thinker than a great imitator.
That’s my personal belief, and getting off topic a little. But personally, I want to work with creative inventive people. As a student, I don’t think pros expect you to be technically seasoned. But good thinking really shows through.
