1/5: Thread:
Just catching up on the absolutely damning & absolutely accurate assessment of the state of the UK's finest sites for nature - #SSSIs - and the regulators that are meant to protect them by @charlottebsmith with Emma Rose of @Unchecked_UK on tonight's @BBCCountryfile

2/5: This highlight's the gaping chasm between @BorisJohnson's rhetoric on ambition for nature & the shocking reality. Swinging cuts to the budgets & staff of @NaturalEngland (who failed to field a spokesman??) and of @EnvAgency
3/5: A failure to assess condition of our most important sites (70% of England's #SSSIs not monitored in the last 6 yrs (54% the last time @CarolineLucas asked...), @NatResWales confirm they have no idea about the state of their #SSSIs & no response at all from @nieaevents... !!
4/5: Also lack of use of prosecution & enforcement powers & concerns re the failure to establish environmental watchdogs for a post Brexit UK - the promised new Office for Environmental Protection in England is looking way more lapdog
than watchdog
! @DefraGovUK @GreenerUK_

5/5: No surprises here - see for example the RSPB's #LostDecade for Nature report http://ww2.rspb.org.uk/Images/A%20LOST%20DECADE%20FOR%20NATURE_tcm9-481563.pdf but so depressing and so utterly unacceptable! Great to see my old @NaturalEngland colleague Mike Quigley telling it like it is - and what it is is completely unacceptable
