this is called a "busy board" and I got the wood free from a lumber yard's scrap heap and bought most of the fixtures at the 99 cent store around the block. installing the light switch was the trickiest part, ended up using a hole saw. you could prob make the whole thing for <$20
the process reminded me of making a ditty bag, a task sailors used to undertake in their free time on long passages. you practice a lot of different techniques for knotwork and sailmaking and end up with a useful personalized tote bag. some examples here https://www.theknottybear.co.uk/p/canvas-work.html?m=1
