Abortion and politics—a short thread:

As it becomes increasingly clear that the abortion issue is no more than a political football for too many power mongers and seekers, we need to keep a few things in mind.

1/
First, we must not deny that for some that’s all the abortion issue is: a means to power, control, votes, and money.

With that said, it’s also important to acknowledge that many of us genuinely believe the unborn child is a human being worthy of protection.

2/
We care about the politics of it because we care deeply about human life (all lives) and we want the law to protect human life (all of it). And we care deeply about the mothers and fathers and the things (internal or external) that lead them to choose death rather than life. 3/
It’s not always easy or possible to discern the difference between the political player and the genuine believer. And some people can even be both. So we need to be discerning, examining the fruits folks exhibit in their words and their lives. Be wary at times, wise always.

4/
But this is the real challenge if we care about life (and pardon, please, the pun which works so well here):

We must take care in our growing distrust and cynicism not to throw out the baby with the bath water— literally or metaphorically.

Lives are depending on us.

Answer to Q 1: I’m asking people not to abandon the prolife cause out of cynicism.

Answer to Q 2: We need to discern the difference so we don’t become disillusioned when we think the player is a believer. Be clear eyed not disillusioned.
