pansexuality: a thread
✰ frequently asked questions
- what is pansexuality?

pansexuality is attraction regardless of gender! that means that we are attracted to all genders, because gender simply doesn’t play a role in our attraction.
- but isn’t that the same as bisexuality?

no! bisexuality by its definition means attraction to two or more genders! more ≠ all. bisexuals can definitely be attracted to all genders but 1. not all of them are and 2. gender is still a defining factor in their attraction!
- but isn’t pansexuality transphobic?

no! trans ppl are included in every sexuality not just pansexuality. if ur attracted to a trans woman, for example, ur simply.. attracted to women, bc trans women are real women!
- can’t you just id as bi?

bisexual and pansexual do have similarities but they are ultimately very different. identifying as bi would simply not be accurate to how i actually feel about my attraction to people.
- can pansexuals have a preference?

yes but not in the way u might think!! here’s a tiktok that i think explains it pretty well!
✰commonly used phases that don’t explain pansexuality well at ALL
“ hearts not parts”

this implies that other sexualities are only attracted to parts which is simply incorrect and offensive. this is not what pansexuality is at all
“pansexuals are genderblind”

i don’t rlly like this statement. we’re not genderblind, it simply doesn’t play a role in our attraction !! but we still see and acknowledge gender, like everyone else !!
“pansexuality is being attracted to women, men and trans people”

nope !! as i mentioned before, trans people are included in every sexuality. separating attraction to cis ppl and trans ppl is vv transphobic and not what pansexuality is whatsover.
✰ how to know if you’re pan (or know you’re not)
1. read read read !!

informing yourself is always the first step!! read this thread, google more info, read carrds... collect as much information about pansexuality as u can !! maybe you’ll find an explanation along the way that fits you perfectly !
2. talk to pan people !!

this is how i realized i was pan !! talking to pan people one on one is the best way for all of ur doubts to be answered. if u don’t know any pan people u could talk to my dms are always open !!
3. try it out !

when i’m questioning something about my identity, i usually “come out” to a close group of people and see how it feels. when i realized i liked girls, i came out as bi online. with time, i realized that i didn’t identify with my bi friends. thats when it hit me !
✰ casual panphobia that you might be partaking in
- calling pansexuality a microlabel

a micro-label is an identity that falls under the umbrella of a larger identity and cannot stand on its own. pansexuality does NOT fall under an umbrella and can very much stand on its own. don’t call it a micro-label.
- excluding pansexuals/ pan flags from lgbtq + posts

i can’t even begin to count the amount of times i’ve sat there like: “okay but.. where’s the pan flag”. pansexuality isn’t a micro-label, so seeing it constantly not being included is frankly exhausting.
tw / pedophilia

- saying we’re attracted to frying pans, animals, children...

i can’t believe i even have to say this, but these jokes are vv unfunny and offensive. also making jokes about pedophilia is disgusting. stop making these jokes.
✰ pansexual flag discourse
lets hope this doesn’t get messy.... anyways as some of u have probably noticed, there are two commonly used pan flags (pictured below). there is a LOT of discourse about what flag is truly the right one to use and so i want to kinda.. break it down for everyone
1. original pan flag

the original pan flag was created in 2010 on tumblr. the reason why some people don’t feel comfortable using this flag is bc the creator of the flag supports bi/pan lesbians. personally i think that if u can separate creator from flag this is still fine !!
2. the new pan flag

a few twitter users created this flag. a lot of people dislike the flag bc it has a “transphobic meaning” but i literally can’t find ANYTHING saying that this flag is transphobic. people say that the extra stripes separate cis/trans ppl but there’s no source
some people insist that the new flag is unnecessary and prefer the old one. if u have a post from the creators that explains the meaning of the new flag pls send it to me !! i genuinely can’t find ANY post by the creators saying that the stripes separate cis and trans ppl
- so which one to use?

i don’t think it matters. the old pan flag is important to some people and if they can separate the creator from the flag then i think they can def still use it. but as i said, there’s no real proof that the new flag is transphobic. so both are fine to use
to finish it off: if ur panphobic frogs dont like u
HI someone sent me the meanings of the new pan flag so here u go !!!!
here’s another definition that i got !! the original definition of bisexuality that i used does still apply to some ppl but this person wanted to describe bisexuality a bit differently so im adding it too !!!
