Like at some point universities need to recognize that this is a world-destabilizing event and that as much fun as it would be for university presidents to make the endowment even more money via stock market, if enough Americans die, the stock market will crash anyways.
Universities want to pretend they can trade ‘hundreds of students and workers getting infected to save the economy and the endowment’ when actually both things will crash under this directive.
Also: let’s not pretend that having no breaks is good for the mental health of students or their instructors. Burnout, especially for my students taking the same course load but online, is taking its toll. This policy will not ameliorate that.
I also find it sad that MSU is willing to put so many of its frontline workers at risk as well as endanger the essential works at Sparrow and other local hospitals. Students are going to get sick and overwhelm these places. School isn’t safe until we have a vaccine.
