Female Red Army sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko, nicknamed "Lady Death", fought mainly in sieges of Odessa & Sevastopol. She has 309 total confirmed kills, including 36 Axis snipers.

Pavlichenko now in USA, on a Soviet publicity tour to persuade Western allies to open a second front against Nazis: "Gentlemen, I am 25 years old & I have killed 309 fascist invaders by now. Don't you think that you have been hiding behind my back for too long?"

Lyudmila Pavlichenko was evacuated by submarine from Sevastopol after being hit by mortar shrapnel in June. A mortar shell also killed her husband of a few weeks, fellow sniper Alexei Kitsenko.
