Queen Charlotte of Great Britain was England’s mixed race Queen, and royal. Born in 1744 to the Duke Charles Louis Fredrick and Princess Elizabeth Albertina of Saxe-Hildburghausen, Charlotte would only be 17 when she became the Queen of Britain.
King George III had decided to choose Princess Charlotte as a bride, her brother traveled to Britain in August of 1761, where he signed the marriage contract allowing King George to marry Princess Charlotte.
Charlotte arrived in Britain in September of that year, less than six hours upon arrival her wedding to King George the third began on the 8th of September at St.James Palace, later that month on the 22nd, their coronation took place and she became the Queen of Britain.
A few months later, Queen Charlotte gave birth to her first son, King George IV, Charlotte and George III had 15 children together, 13 of which survived until adulthood. The two got on well, and as they shared a love for music, often attended plays and concerts together.
In 1762 they purchased Buckingham House, now known as Buckingham Palace, although St. James Palace was their official residence, Charlotte loved Buckingham House so much it was known as “the Queens house”.
They also bought Frogmore House in 1792 as a country retreat for her and her unmarried daughters. Queen Charlotte founded numerous orphanages and in 1809 she came became Patron of the General Lying-in Hospital,
which was renamed as The Queen's Hospital, and is now The Queen Charlottes and Cheasa Hospital. Although Queen Charlotte had a black ancestors, it has been claimed by historians that Charlotte was “whitewashed” in portraits of her, as she was allegedly darker skinned than
depicted in portraits. Charlotte was described as “intelligent” although her education was poor, speaking French and leaning how to speak English to allow her to communicate with the royal family.
In 1788, King George III started to develop a mental illness, which lead him to become increasingly mentally deranged. Charlotte was supposed to take over as regent, however after a dispute with the Prince Of Wales over this, he took over as King regent as Charlotte stayed
George’s guardian. By 1818, George was in Windsor castle with his illness, Charlotte stayed in Kew palace as she suffered from dropsy, making her unable to travel.
She stayed mostly in her bedroom and passed in November 1818, in a black armchair surrounded by her daughters, Prince regant and the duke of York, the armchair is still in Kew Palace.
Her funeral took place on the 2nd of December 1818, in Windsor castle where she was buried.
