How do you define success in your life?
Do you:
Have to run a marathon?
Become a millionaire, or a billionaire?
Date a super-model?

I used to be a young man.
Back then, success to me was synonymous with fame, fortune, and other materialistic endeavors.
But in reaching a milestone in age last year, I did some reminiscing.
It was amazing to see how my definition of success has changed over time.

Nowadays, success for me has a lot more to do with:
Having a great relationship with my wife
Raising a healthy family
Helping people
Contributing to society as a whole
Serving God
Consider what all these things have in common…

You see…
Years ago I had a realization:
Material things are quickly fading.
If you make them into your idol, your reason for living, you will never find real happiness.

Don’t get me wrong.
Some of the flashy things that society and modern media screams at you to strive for would still be fun to have.
And if I won the lottery, you wouldn’t hear me complaining.
But, there's more to life than this.

But before we get in to the nitty gritty:
Between you and me, I would never judge your definition of success.
You're free to decide what your life is about, and what makes you feel happy.
That said:
It's helpful to consider your motivations.

So, you’re in the process of choosing your goals.
OK, just take some time to think about why you want that thing.
Ponder it, and filter it through your present values.
Do you want it because society tells you you should?
Do you want it because you USED to want it?

(9/24)
Don’t just chase your goals willy-nilly.
You may find that you’re pursuing something completely outdated for you.
Worse, it might not in line with who you really are.
Maybe you think you want it because you saw it in the latest movie, or heard it in a catchy song.

More important things could right under your nose.
Truly valuable things that:
Establish your legacy
Build others up
Have a positive impact on society

Realistic achievements in line with your belief system TODAY could make you feel much happier with much less work.
You just need to open your eyes.

Here’s an example:
Imagine that the only thing you’ve ever wanted is to become a CEO of a Fortune 500 company.
Why do you want to achieve that?
What is it that creates that drive within you?

Maybe you just want the money a role like that would provide.
It could also be the resulting security that you’re after.

(14/25)
Or, it could be more of an external motivation that interests you in that endeavor.
You might want to prove someone wrong, or make someone jealous.
It could be that you were you jilted by a former lover, and you want to rub it in their face.

Life is very short.
If your life goal is based on status or making someone eat crow you’ll neglect a lot of things that could make you happy in the present moment.
So what if someone doesn’t love you?

(16/24)
There are billions of people in this world.
At least a few of them will love you for who you are.
Just strive to be the best version of yourself.

OK.
Let’s look at our CEO example again.
You might have a nobler motivation.
It could be that you’d like to develop an organization to help people.
You believe that getting that role (and the associated money) first is the only way to make that happen.

Don’t wait until you have wealth and status to help people.
You’ll discover that you wasted a lot of years.
Consider all the people you won’t be able to help while you’re focused on pursuing your grand achievements.

(19/24)
What if you simply start helping those people now?
For example, you could learn how non-profits work, and steadily build the organization you want to build from the ground up.
You could install your REAL values instead of the values society tells you to have.

Understand there are many different ways of looking at this, and many other examples you could consider.
Key takeaway here is that in looking closely at why you want what you think you want you’ll make some surprising discoveries.
You'll save yourself a lot of time.

Play with your perspective.
A lot of the things you want to achieve could be just around the corner.
And realize there could be great value it:
Closely examining your motivations
Tweaking or even overhauling your goals accordingly

You could accomplish many great things of actual value at the same time.
You could also be that much more satisfied.
And we could all use a bit more satisfaction.
Just ask Mick Jagger.

Are the goals today still in line with what you value and who you really are?
Are you adding to the pain of this world and after purely selfish achievements?
Or, are you fighting on the side of good?
